My friend Grandma says prayer means access to a most powerful God. She says it is a great privilege to approach the God directly through prayer. But one must remember that prayer is not a magic wand. Ultimately we must accept Gods will even if it does not conform to what we want. That sometimes hurts. In spite of our prayers my mom died of cancer and my brother of complications from diabetes.
A doctor friend pointed out that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, but Lazarus is no longer with us. In other words we will all ultimately die. This does not mean God does not heal people or save people from death, temporarily. We should be thankful for the time God has given our friends and loved ones. My mom fought her cancer for 17 years. My brother went into a diabetic coma when he was about 15. He was given a 20 percent chance of survival at the time. But he pulled through. He lived for another 27 years.
While prayer is not a magic wand, God does command us to pray. We must remember that God is ruler of the universe. God is not bound by the laws of nature. These laws are not iron clad. Think of a king, czar of pharaoh of ancient times. That ruler could spare execute or spare someone at will. I realize that this is an imperfect analogy. Unlike the rulers of ancient times, God is both just and merciful.
I know of one man who suffered a heart attack before his daughters wedding. Family members feared he would not make it. Or that if he did recover, he would not be well enough to attend his daughters wedding. But he not only recovered but walked down the aisle with his daughter.
So miracles can happen.
