Cicero is cynical about our enthusiasm about events in the Middle East. He makes a fair point, I suppose, but I think the larger point holds: things are happening over there that weren't supposed to happen, the same way the Berlin Wall was never going to come down. In such a climate, one wants to feel optimistic because if things turn out, another major swath of the globe will in time enjoy that which Americans most cherish, the Rights of Englishmen. Sic venit gloria in mundum.
