Sappy thought for the day:
Labels do not generally serve to identify us, but to circumscribe us. Republican, Democrat... Black, White... Muslim, Christian, Jew... Recovering Alcoholic, Drunkard, Clean... The effect of these labels - and we all use them - is not to give a clear picture of who we are, but to define in opposition all the things that we are not. The ultimate effect of this shorthand is to provide our ultimate circumscription: As a being insufficiently unique and interesting to be worth knowing on one's own terms.
