Paul Klee's paintings find permanent home
BERN, Switzerland -- When Paul Klee applied for Swiss nationality after fleeing Nazi Germany, his request was refused because it was feared that if his art should "take root in Switzerland, it would insult real art and cause good taste to deteriorate."
The authorities are always so great at identifying the masters of their own time. One wonders, fifty years from now, what kind of correlation there will be between NEA grants and reputation/average auction price for artists from the 1980s and '90s. Bet it's not high.
