Instantman notes the whining about Bush not having saved the world in nearly four months, plus the chatter about vacations, etc. He seems to get more realistic about it toward the end of the updates.

Every time I see another story about the long vacation, I just shake my head. I don't suppose that the average person "on vacation" spends a few hours a morning getting briefings and making decisions critical to the enterprise with which they are associated. The average autoworker doesn't have to go out and weld a chassis or two before the fishing trip, nor does the the average waiter on vacation have to serve a few customers before sitting down to breakfast at the bed and breakfast. Bush's vacation sucks.

One of Instapundit's readers notes that Bush needs a real vacation. And how. In fact, we're all in a phase where a little vacation is in order. Last fall, Kaus was writing about people supporting Kerry so we could take a break from the momentuous history making. Now they're sniping because the drafting of an Iraqi constitution isn't enough excitement.

You wanna talk excitment? All those oranges and roses and other flavors, flowers and colors of revolutions seem to be consolidating their gains as the foundations are laid for democracy. The Sunnis in Iraq are bitching about what kind of constitution they're going to live under, while those who answer "none" are increasingly rolled over by a process that won't stop for all their efforts to derail it. Afghanistan is so under control that when something bad does happen it's big news. This isn't, as Insty says, "bursty" news. But it's so damn cool that I'm drinking it up like an iced lemonade. Six months of democratic revolution followed by six months of calm - as opposed to solemn words about the unfolding reign of terror? I'll take it.

Like Insty, I think that the backseating of the social agenda is a feature, not a bug, of all this excitement. But regardless, Bush has done enough to feel he's had one helluva presidency. Bored reporters and whiny bloggers should lay off, or maybe get off their butts and do something exciting for themselves. Bush, for his part, needs a rest so that when things do pick up again, he's ready for it. If we're too obsessed with our own agendas and personal beefs to appreciate this, well, there's a reason he's president and we're not.
