“My administration,” the president added, “is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.” - Barack Obama to some bankers (see Moe Lane for more)
So what? Some would say that the police are all that's standing between us and the drug runners. Or that the Marines are all that's standing between our freedom and submission to Al-Qaeda. But it's the police's job to guard public safety. And it's the Marines' sworn duty to protect us.
And it's the President's job to uphold the Constitution and the laws of our country.
Guess what? Minimum wage McDonald's workers are all that's standing between public safety and an e-coli outbreak. Conscientious secretaries are all that's standing between delivered messages leading to business opportunities or undelivered messages leading to corporate collaspse. Dutiful parents are all that's standing between kids going to school and sleeping with a roof over their heads or starving to death in the street. Come to think of it, the Secret Service is all that's standing between Barack Obama and the president of the John Hinckley, Jr. fan club.
It's a good thing the rest of us take the responsibilities of our positions more seriously than President Obama.
Afterthought: At the inauguration, there was a lot of hassle because of some missed words and we were all told that the conservatives were going to make a stink about him not really being President. Is the real story that Barack Obama thinks he didn't actually swear to uphold the Constitution and the laws of our country?
