The policy of leaving nature untouched, other than to put out the occasional fire, meant that we neither let nature clear things out her way bit by bit, acre by acre, nor cleared it out ourselves. Which is to say that we created the conditions for these fires to rage. It's time for that to change: forest workers should again clear the underbrush, just as they should allow loggers to harvest the most mature trees while either paying them or offering them a premium to remove the dead trees as well. * * *posted by gbarto at 12:23 AM:As always, impossible to read Den Beste without just throwing up a link for every article, but this one has some sharp observations.* * *posted by gbarto at 12:20 AM:There are some stories about which Den Beste has Nothing to Say.* * *posted by gbarto at 12:13 AM:French news:Says Le Monde: G8: A New Plan of Action for Africa; School for 2-3 year olds and the baby boom - a baby boomlet is making it difficult for France to project needed resources for pre-schools. But it's a good joke and it's pretty truthful for a politician. It's funny to see these do-gooders having these hissy-fits. I remember when Clinton cracked that the only reason Rush Limbaugh accused John Conyers of getting abusive with Janet Reno in a post-Waco hearing was because it was a black man attacking a white woman. I know I wasn't quite as avid a reader, but I don't remember a lot of "Where's the outrage?" stories for that kind of bad taste remark. But then I guess Democrats screaming racism, even in a humorous context, is pretty common fare. Whereas a Bush stretching the truth is pretty unusual. * * *posted by gbarto at 4:34 PM:Now to see if blogger's up yet.* * *posted by gbarto at 11:45 AM:Supreme Court Votes to Uphold School Vouchers5-4 ruling allows public money to be used for religious schools. However, the calls for Israeli withdrawal to pre-1967 borders is wrongheaded; while a peace settlement could offer such a withdrawal after a certain period of time, say five years, if the Palestinians and surrounding Arab nations demonstrated a good faith committment to peace, it is not appropriate to call on Israel to give up its defense perimeter until the Arab nations have demonstrated that they can be trusted not to again use it as a staging ground. * * *posted by gbarto at 11:21 AM:Emmanuelle is writing about Ann Landers too.* * *posted by gbarto at 11:14 AM:Oh no! Leaving aside the fact that we created civilization to escape the perils of Mother Nature, it seems to me that if we were truly following that course, fires of five or ten years ago would have been allowed to run their course so that at least some of the underbrush which feeds this tinderbox would have been consumed earlier. Instead, our national policy has been to turn our national forests into bonfires waiting to be set, while protecting them as such until a fire comes along that we can't control. It's time to return to harvesting trees that will soon be dead anyway while hauling away underbrush and clearing out dead trees. Then the Forest Service could actually pay for itself in dollars, instead of costing in lives. * * *posted by gbarto at 10:56 AM:A little French news:Balladur upsets plans for neat resolution of who will head the UMP Arafat's headquarters targeted New boost to minimum wage to be limited to 2.4% without harmonization of different minimum wages across sectors; French government will encourage voluntary harmonization Sharon wants massive action against Hamas * * *posted by gbarto at 10:48 AM:TurkeyBlog posting continues to be limited, but here a few posts this morning, starting here:No more Ann Landers. * * *Sunday, June 23, 2002posted by gbarto at 11:22 AM:Now it's Arizona that's burning, with forests dangerously dry and dangerously loaded with underbrush.
